I almost don’t need to read the book anymore after your well summarized review. Two thoughts: Yesterday I was running errands and specifically noted the lack of trees in the parking lot. It was a scorchy 95 degrees out and felt even hotter on the blacktop. I tried to park by the one sad stick they had in the middle that sort of resembled a tree to give any shade to my vehicle. If they had trees throughout the parking lot, it would have been much more enjoyable to walk to the store from my car. But that means increased cost and maintenance for the shopping landlords and they don’t want that. Also while in that parking lot, I saw a lady pushing her obese elderly dog in a stroller while she herself was on roller blades. Made me chuckle. My #1 tip for creating a walkable city and one that every single person reading this can do is to pick up garbage. Garbage = a sense of filth, crime, and lower class. It just isn’t pleasant to walk down a street littered in garbage, but is a joy and brings a sense of safety when walking in an upper class neighborhood with no garbage laying about. Have you ever seen the 1989 movie Lean on Me? Its based on a true story and I highly recommend it. The school is graffitied to high heaven and the first thing this incoming principal does is repaint the whole school and say if any more comes up it is to be covered up that same day. He says that the students need to have a sense of pride in their school and if they go to school in a dump they will treat it like a dump and that will then rub off into their personal lives. Same goes with trash, clean up your neighborhood and people will respect and enjoy living there more.
