Hi Alicia! I’m not sure how often the basic CERT training requires renewal, if it does – I think they’ve traditionally worked off the Catch and Release style you mentioned. They do monthly trainings, but they’re not mandatory and are mostly done over Zoom. Their big change came when Covid hit and they stepped up to help out with a lot of support tasks for local agencies and NGOs. They’ve worked hard to maintain those relationships with their volunteer work.

My local CERT group performs a wide range of volunteer work, from food banks to providing first aid or traffic control at events, in between activations. It seems like a good way to build familiarity between members as well as inform the public of their existence.

Thank you and Stephanie both for all of your hard work! You are awesome. The roundup has been such a valuable resource, especially when we were working through all the rumors and active disinformation during the early stages of the pandemic. The amount of work put into the roundup has been evident and I totally understand why they’re evolving to its new model. Thank you for wading through it all to bring us good information – all of the work has been deeply appreciated.

An inexpensive window punch like this can be cheap insurance if you need to get someone or something out of a locked car in a hurry. Use a side or rear window (the windshield is laminated glass and will not shatter), preferably on the far side from whoever you’re trying to get to to avoid covering them in glass. I’ve kept one in the glove box of every car I’ve owned. I’ve also heard good things about the Resqme window punch/seat belt cutter combos, but I can’t testify to those personally.

The DOT’s Emergency Response Guidebook (ERG) is a good, free resource for evaluating the various hazardous materials that get moved around the country via rail and truck on a daily basis. It’s meant for first responders to be able to be able to quickly size up a situation and gives some basic first steps for them to take (including isolation and evacuation distances). For preppers it at least gives an idea of how nasty a particular substance is. In this case, the ERG points out (as you did in the roundup) that while chlorine is indeed heavier than air, it can also travel substantial distances if wind conditions are right.
